Battle of the Bulge V

Sunday, December 14, 2008
Our 34th Scenario Game

For the fifth straight year, Outdoor Adventures Scenario Productions presents one of its most popular events, a recreation of one of the most famous battles of World War II. Last year more than 400 players attended! Using our extremely successful and simplified format, there will be tanks, pyrotechnics, multiple missions and props, along with Generals, Commanders, Engineers, and Medics.

More than $2,000 in total prizes will be drawn and awarded all day long.
Background

The German attack was code named "Wacht am Rhein" (Watch at the Rhine), but the Americans called it the Battle of the Bulge based on the shape of the German penetration into the Allied front. The German offensive ran into tenacious defenders and then ran out of fuel, with their attacks sputtering to a halt by the end of December. Allied counterattacks then gradually pushed the Germans back to their homeland.

A German surprise attack. On December 16, 1944, more than a half million German soldiers launched a major offensive in the Ardennes Forest area of Belgium. Their goal was to cut through this thinly held American sector and capture the vital supply port of Antwerp, isolating several Allied armies in the process.

The siege and relief of Bastogne. By December 21 the German forces had surrounded Bastogne, which was defended by the 101st Airborne Division and Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division. Conditions inside the perimeter were tough—most of the medical supplies and medical personnel had been captured. Food was scarce, and ammunition was so low that artillery crews were forbidden to fire on advancing Germans unless there was a large, heavy concentration of them. Despite determined German attacks, however, the perimeter held.

We will re-create the Siege of Bastogne again this year. One fifth of the Allied forces will start in Bastogne, completely surrounded by the German Army.
